The glaring box in front of you at home or office has worked wonders for our civilization today. The ubiquitous computers can also cause a lot of damage to the eyes, as working on them is a visually intensive task.

Headache, pain in the nape of the neck, backache, eyestrain, blurred vision, dry and irritated eyes are usual symptoms seen in people working on computers for long hours.

Eyestrain

When one works in front of a computer, the muscles around the eyes help in focussing. The constant use causes tightening of these fibres thereby discomfort and eyestrain. It could appear as mild headache irritation or smarting pain in the eyes.

Prevention

i) Placing the monitor a little below the line of vision will help prevent complete opening of the eyelids thereby lesser area of the eye surface being exposed to air most of the time and thereby lessening of dryness of the eyes.

If you look straight at the desk you should be able to peer over the top of the monitor. This position will help lessen eyestrain and prevent neck and back strain.

ii) Taking a break of 20 seconds for every 20 minutes of work will go a long way in reducing eyestrain.

iii) Seeing that light is not reflected from surroundings on to the screen will reduce the need for muscular contraction around the eyes.

iv) LCD monitors are safer and less stressful for the eyes.

Dry eyes

The very act of staring at the monitor for a long time without blinking leads to evaporation of the tear film over the eyes.

Every act of blinking helps spread the tears over the eyes but reduced during this activity. Invariably, people work in air-conditioned environments today and this again contributes to drying and dehydration.

There is a sensation of dryness, gritty sand like sensation in the eyes leading to redness, irritation and pain. This also leads to feeling of strain and blurring of vision.

Prevention

i) Blinking the eyes consciously for a few seconds every 20 minutes will help spread the tear film over the eyes.

ii) Staring away from the monitor for a few seconds.

iii) Smoking and alcohol also contribute to dry eyes and even worse optic nerve damage. So it should better be avoided.

iv) Drinking a lot of water is helpful.

v) Splashing the face with water three times a day will help with a refreshing effect.

Headache

Eyestrain, improper work conditions, glare of the monitor are the common causes of headache. It is usually felt in the area between the eyes and top of the nose.

Apart from the above preventive factors intake of foods rich in Vitamin A, C and E are necessary.

Citrus fruits, green leafy vegetables, spinach, tomatoes, carrots, cucumber, fresh fruits, dairy and poultry products contain these.

People using contact lenses should not put them on for more than 10-12 hours a day.

In spite of the preventive steps if there is dryness of eyes, Bryonia, Sulphur, Natrum mur help relieve it.

Euphrasia remedies redness of the eyes, blurred vision while remedies like Ruta relieves headache. To compensate the visual ergonomics homoeopathy has a soothing remedy.
